“Why is such a man alive”
The Brothers Karamazov“Why is such a man alive?” is Dmitri’s furious challenge during the Karamazov family gathering at Zosima’s cell. Pointing at the old man and asking whether he can be allowed to go on defiling the earth, Dmitri gives his hostility toward his father the form of a public, seemingly moral judgment—one that makes Fyodor’s immediate cry of “parricide” sound like both an accusation and a weapon.
The Outburst
Dmitri is beside himself with rage, yet his delivery is described as hollow, even, and deliberate. He hunches his shoulders until he looks almost deformed, then looks around at everyone and points at the old man. The question is not a passing mutter: its controlled, public address makes the gathering witness to the force of his hatred.
The wording turns private animosity into a condemnation of the old man’s presence in the world. Dmitri asks whether such a man should be permitted to continue “defiling the earth,” casting his personal grievance in the language of pollution and judgment. The gesture at his father fixes the question on a specific person, even as the phrasing gives the anger a broader moral reach.
The Accusation of Parricide
Dmitri’s words draw an immediate response from Fyodor. Rushing toward Father Iosif, he calls on the monks to listen to the parricide, making Dmitri’s outburst into apparent proof of the charge. The exchange turns the gathering’s dispute into a public confrontation over the meaning of shame: Kalganov has just cried out that the behavior is shameful and disgraceful, and Fyodor counters by presenting Dmitri’s own words as the greater offense.
The expression foreshadows the story’s central parricide accusation without itself establishing that Dmitri has committed murder. Its force lies in the dangerous convergence of genuine hatred, explicit language about whether a man should remain alive, and an audience ready to hear those words as a threat. Fyodor’s label collapses that distinction in the heat of the scene, converting a spoken wish for the old man’s removal into the name of a crime.
